The investigation begins with an extensive review of publicly available information relating to both Michael Wei and the Ridgeway family.

Anderson conducts the majority of the open-source intelligence gathering, compiling a detailed profile of Wei's online presence. Social media paints the picture of an academically gifted but otherwise ordinary young man. Facebook activity had slowed considerably in recent years, while Instagram primarily consisted of photographs uploaded by friends.

Dating profiles on Tinder, Bumble and PlentyOfFish had all lain dormant for approximately two months.

Further investigation into Columbia University's records reveals Wei to have excelled academically, graduating with exceptional results in Mathematics while also performing strongly in Philosophy and History.

Thesis Focus

Anderson discovers that Wei's doctoral thesis had changed direction several times during the previous year. Initially focused upon the Fibonacci sequence and its application to psychology, the research later shifted towards Mormon philosophy through the lens of string theory before finally settling upon The Historical Works and Mathematical Insights of Faustus Claudan, a sixteenth-century mathematician whose surviving works are believed to be incomplete.

Anderson recognises Claudan's name from obscure historical literature concerning forgotten philosophers and mathematicians whose discoveries were largely lost to history.

Building a Profile

Smith simultaneously reviews Michael Wei's criminal and government records.

No previous convictions, aliases or known extremist affiliations are identified. Wei had previously attracted the attention of a redacted government agency before ultimately being rejected.

Dellaroche confirms that the organisation was the CIA, who briefly considered Wei for research work due to his extraordinary mathematical ability. The application was terminated following review of Wei's political activity, including anti-presidential statements made within a university discussion group.

The investigation identifies Molly Frank, organiser of several university protests, as one of Wei's more frequent social contacts. While her own criminal history consists solely of overnight detention following a demonstration, her name repeatedly appears throughout Wei's online interactions.

Personal Profile

Taken together, the available evidence profiles Wei as a young academic whose exceptional potential had noticeably declined over recent months. His withdrawal from university life, deteriorating research progress and increasingly erratic thesis choices point towards either a significant decline in mental wellbeing or an external influence that remains unidentified.

Personal Correspondence & Outgoings

Anderson successfully gains access to Wei's university email account.

The overwhelming majority of recent correspondence consists of automated marketing emails and online shopping advertisements with no immediately obvious relevance to the investigation.

A more significant exchange is discovered between Wei and his doctoral supervisor, Professor Elaine Wilcox. Two days before the murders, Professor Wilcox expresses concern regarding Wei's lack of progress and requests an urgent meeting.

Wei responds only with, "I will be available at 9:23."

University calendar records show numerous academic meetings, including the scheduled supervision session, although Wei failed to formally accept many of the invitations. No evidence of therapy sessions, counselling or private appointments is found.

The Ridgeway Family

Attention briefly turns towards the victims themselves.

Clark Ridgeway appears to have been an active member of both his school's hockey team and a local board gaming society. The Ridgeway family display little evidence of extensive travel, although social media documents a family holiday to Japan during the previous year, described as a "once in a lifetime opportunity."

Malcolm Ridgeway had spent over twenty years employed within the automotive manufacturing industry, specialising in machinery microprocessors.

Dinah Ridgeway dedicated much of her time to volunteering at a local sports centre, assisting with children's activities.

Michael Ridgeway had recently been discharged from Trenton Psychiatric Evaluation Centre, leaving the facility only thirteen days prior to the murders.

No immediate connection between either family or Columbia University is established.

Preparing the Investigation

A package addressed to Smith arrives at the Hilton Hotel. Inside, a secured lockbox containing identification, credentials and equipment supporting Stevens' FBI Hostage Rescue Team cover identity under the name Victoria Tanner.

The team agree that containing dissemination of the hypergeometric sequence remains the highest operational priority.

A decision is made to divide the investigation.

Smith and Stevens travel to the Ridgeway residence at 99 Dove Pond Drive.

Dellaroche and Anderson proceed towards Columbia University to investigate Wei's academic life.

The Ridgeway Residence

Upon arriving at the crime scene, Smith and Stevens encounter a substantial media presence surrounding the property. Multiple FBI vehicles, New Jersey State Police units and national news crews have already established positions around the residence.

After presenting their credentials, the pair are greeted by FBI Agent Gant and FBI Agent Cainer, who escort them through the crime scene.

Sequence of Events

The reconstruction confirms that Wei entered the property at approximately 14:28, shooting Malcolm, Dinah, Clark, Dean, Mary and Claire Ridgeway inside or around the kitchen. Clark Ridgeway survived the initial shotgun blast before being shot a second time.

Curiously, Wei discharged additional rounds into the upper walls of the kitchen after shooting each victim. A damaged kitchen clock permanently displays 14:28, the approximate beginning of the attack.

Agent Gant additionally notes an unusual feature of the crime scene. Wei discharged sixteen shotgun rounds during the murders - a mix of both slugs and shells.

Michael Ridgeway escaped upstairs before fleeing the property, only to be killed outside moments later.

Evidence Containment

Smith immediately requests a complete list of every individual exposed to the hypergeometric sequence, insisting the numbers represent a matter of national security requiring immediate destruction. While Agent Cainer appears confused by the request, both Cainer and Gant agree to assist.

A Dr Comox is idenitifed amongst the individuals who have been exposed to the sequence, a mathematician requested for additional profiling. Stevens reports this as a concern to the operation handler.

The FBI also confirms that all personal effects belonging to both Wei and the Ridgewayfamily have been transferred to the Bureau's temporary command post at Motel 6, while the bodies have already been transported to the county coroner.

Breach in Containment

Stevens and Gant canvass neighbouring properties for potential CCTV footage.

Channel 6 reporter Enrico Save broadcasts live from outside the crime scene, publicly revealing that investigators are focusing upon a mysterious mathematical sequence left by the killer.

Travelling towards Columbia University, Anderson and Dellaroche hear the report over the radio. Dellaroche immediately contacts Smith, stressing the catastrophic consequences should the sequence itself be publicly released.

Alliance Police Chief Upton Weeks begins reading the sequence aloud during the pre-recorded interview - transmitting 13 of the 16 numbers of the sequence.

Smith rapidly persuades Save to suspend the broadcast in exchange for an exclusive FBI interview. Taking control of the live coverage, Smith publicly dismisses any connection between mathematics and the murders, characterising the sequence as the meaningless scribblings of a disturbed individual.

Smith inadvertently identifies the suspect asMichael Wei before the information had officially been released, he successfully follows this with a deliberately falsified numerical sequence to contaminate any partial recordings of the genuine broadcast.

Psychological Evaluations

Jackie Stevens – Maintains professional composure throughout the investigation and adapts well to unfamiliar FBI procedures. Successfully sustains cover identity despite close scrutiny from Bureau personnel.

Malcolm Smith – Continues to display effective leadership under increasing operational pressure. Rapid response to the live media broadcast prevented further dissemination of classified information, although continued monitoring for decision fatigue is advised.

Marcus Dellaroche – Demonstrates strong strategic awareness and inter-agency expertise. Correctly identifies the wider implications of public exposure to the hypergeometric sequence and prioritises containment accordingly.

Thomas A. Anderson – Continues to perform effectively as a controlled disinformation asset. Demonstrates a consistent willingness to publish sanitised operational details through established conspiracy channels, where surrounding speculation reliably undermines the credibility of genuine information.
